“Between the happiness of the individual and fulfilling one’s duty I choose to set forth like a mother breaking into a burning house to rescue her children.” These were the words of the parachutist Haviva Reick before leaving her kibbutz in British Mandatory Palestine in WW2 on her double mission behind Nazi lines in Slovakia. On behalf of the Jewish leaders in pre-state Israel she had to organize and save the remaining Jews. Her British intelligence mission was the extraction of Allied aircrews that had parachuted into enemy territory. She also assisted the Slovakian fighters in their uprising against the regime that collaborated with Nazi Germany. She carried out her missions with initiative, leadership and courage. Haviva was born in WW1 and fell in the line of duty in WW2. She went to her childhood domains in Slovakia, while her family had already been sent to Auschwitz. The camp she set up in the Slovakian mountains together with three comrades parachutists for a group of Jews was attacked. Haviva and two of her comrades were captured. Their RAF uniforms were of no avail, they were not considered as POW. The Nazis and their local collaborators shot her in the back of the neck, on the edge of a mass grave in which hundreds of Jews, Gypsies and dissidents were buried. At the end of the war her body was transferred to the cemetery in Prague and finally to the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. This book, initially published in Hebrew, is enriched by many photos and documents. It is based on journeys to the domains of her life and death, on deep research and on hundreds of testimonies. The book depicts her dramatic life as a liberated woman who went on the dangerous and finally fatal mission despite entreaties of men who loved her and whom she loved. The description of the life and the death of Haviva Reick is incorporated into events of WW2 in occupied Europe.

Haviva Reick A Kibbutz Pioneer Mission and Fall behind Nazi Lines Tehila Ofer Zeev Ofer 9789655557657 Books Reviews
I am currently reading this book in the original Hebrew, (I'm 2/3 through it) and I just learned the English version is available. The subject In WWII, when the Nazi genocide against the Jews was in full swing, the 400,000 strong Jewish community of Palestine (called the Yishuv) felt great frustration at its inability to aid their brethren in Europe. Although relations with Palestine's ruling British were strained due to British anti-Jewish laws, the British agreed to train and send Jewish commandos into Nazi-occupied Europe to assist the anti Nazi resistance and help Allied airman downed behind enemy lines. Haviva Reick was the less famous of two women commandos who were captured and killed, the better known being Hana Senesh. Most of these commandos, including Haviva (but not Hana Sensh), were recruited from the ranks of the Palmah, the elite strike force of the Jewish underground militia, the Hagana.
The book Authors Tehila and Zeev Ofer are themselves veterans of the Palmah and Tehila has her own fascinating story (she came to Palestine after being caught on an "Aliya Bet" (illegal immigrant) ship and being interred in Cyprus). Zeev had a distinguished career in the Israel Defense Forces. They captures the life and personality of Haviva in great and intimate detail, as though they spent weeks interviewing her. Its hard to believe the Ofers never met her, it is an amazing achievement how they managed to piece so much of Haviva's tragically truncated life together. Haviva was a force majeur, a woman of indomitable spirit and tremendous strength, a heroine in every sense of the word, who lost most of her family and ultimately her own life to the Nazis, even though she had reached safety in Palestine. Aside from telling this riveting story, The Ofers also provide wonderful insight into the lives of Jewish women pioneers and soldiers, particularly those who served in the Palmah in its early, formative years. Overall, it is an intense but fascinating read for any interested in holocaust/WWII studies, life in pre-Israel Jewish Palestine, insight into the lives of female warriors or just a good story about a great woman.
Thank you to the authors, a factual book on factual Heroism, the few having the audacity to confront the mighty power of the fascist
Germany and Slovakia during the WWII. Haviva a 30 years old woman enlisted in the British Army, parachuted in enemy territory,
on a mission to render rescue and facilitate the escape of Allied airmen shot down in Slovakia. Haviva and her group also organized the escape of Jewish Children from Fascist Slovakia. A factual and terrifying adventure that kept me glued to the pages of the book.
Hunted by the Nazis and Slovakian fascists she was caught, tortured and sentenced to death. Her ordeal did not end there, when she was driven to her execution through the streets and house where she was born, played and went to school as a young girl. At that point in the book, I got a lump in my throat and my eyes watered.
Very well written.
