Sergeant York And His People Samuel Kinkade Cowan 9781446088999 Books

This book reveals not only a great American hero but also the people who contributed to Alan York's life. His life is remarkable in that you might not believe someone coming from the wilderness could be so wise and well grounded in his faith and himself. When fame and fortune was offered to him he knew true wealth was found in family and neighbors who loved him. His experiences in World War one are recalled, but not the only story told about Sergeant York. It talks about his great grandfather and further back who shaped the little hamlet where York grew up, stories passed down from generation to generation. It goes as far back as the Revolutionary war and his family's involvement. It's a good read and it makes you proud to be an American.

Sergeant York And His People Samuel Kinkade Cowan 9781446088999 Books Reviews

I purchased this for my on a whim and I found it very interesting. For those who don't know who Sergeant York is he served in the Army in WWI. Basically his unit made contact with a German machine gun trench and was pinned down. Due to York's quick thinking and excellent shooting they took over 100 German prisoners and marched back to Allied lines.

This book appears to be written maybe a few years after WWI. It is sort of a propaganda piece; detailing York's life growing up in Appalachia, religious conviction, etc. Considering the awful nature of WWI and the fact that the US entered it late there were few heroes. York was a celebrity for many years after the war and that this book attempted to fill the gaps in who he was.
A contemporary account. The author visited with Sgt. York, his friends and relatives. But because of that he could not cover Sgt. York's entire life.
I have the movie about him and just wanted to read his life story and how he told it to others. Some of my ancestors came from his area so that interested me too.
Having just visited the Sgt York Home in Pall Mall Tennessee, this book revealing the personal side of Sgt York was very insightful. There, the reader will learn about Sgt York before, during and after the war.
Growing up I had heard of Sgt York but never took the time to explore his story. This book was written by someone who actually met with Sgt York and learned the history of his family and just how the incident(as Sgt York referred to it)occured during World War I and resulted in medals and recognition from around the world for a humble man who only wanted to come home from war to farm a small piece of land in the mountains of Tennessee. I really enjoyed this book on my .
Liked the background, setting, but a bit skeptical of the historical research
One of the best books I have ever read, an amazing man and only if there were more men like him
